GMC CL260 Concept
Renovated 1973 GMC Motorhome

Background of business

A friend gave me a leather-covered, wooden-spoke steering wheel that he had gotten out of a junkyard. The leather was faded, the spokes were in need of refinishing and the horn button was missing. I made a futile search of every junkyard in our area for a horn button and learned that this was apparently a rare wheel. Finally, after several weeks, I found a horn button hundreds of miles away, complete with a GMC logo for my 1973 GMC motorhome.

After finding the horn button, I re-colored the leather to match my upholstery. Then, refinished the spokes to match the dash. I liked the way it turned out and emailed a picture to another GMC motorhome owner. He liked the wheel so well that he put it on a web site.

After that, from time to time, I received inquiries from other GMC Motorhome owners interested in a similar wheel. I wrote each back thanking them for their interest and telling them that I was just a hobbyist and not in the steering wheel business.

Regardless, an occasional inquiry continued to come in and I began to wonder how I might fill the need. Since I am nearing retirement,

I have been thinking that it would be nice to have a small hobby-type business in retirement. The prospect of supplying quality steering wheels for classic GMC motorhomes and other vintage vehicles appealed to me. With this in mind, I searched the country and finally came up with some new old stock steering wheels that are nearly identical to mine. The supply is limited but I can offer some rare and appealing wheels that will enhance the interior of vintage vehicles.

The conceptsteeringwheels.com name came from what I renamed my coach after the restoration was near completion. I called it the CL260 Concept: CL for Canyon Lands, 260 for 26 feet long and Concept for the various upgrades that were added. I expect most of what business we are fortunate enough to receive will come from the Internet, therefore, the "dot com" on the end.

We welcome your inquiries and look forward to supplying you with a steering wheel that will enhance the beauty of your classic GMC motor home or other vintage vehicle. Thanks for your interest, Tom Whitton
